IUEOA

iueo-quoi

I-U-E-O-A represent the vowels of the Roman alphabet. In human language, consonants represent noises rather than precise sounds. It is only by introducing vowels that the noises start to make sense. Therefore, vowels are the instrument that make comprehension possible.

This is the main concept behind the association. Language needs vowels to be expressed and understood. The association IUEOA lives along the same lines: it tries to put into evidence different aspects that surround us but which we don’t necessarily take into account in everyday life.

A collective of graphic designers, artists, musicians, photographers, journalists, environmentalists, travellers and other interested people wish to highlight the place of sustainable development in everyday life. How? Through exhibitions, occasional events and recently through a quarterly publication uniting culture and a green lifestyle.

Environmentalism, sustainable development, greenhouse effect, organic products… these terms are on everybody’s lips at the moment. And ours too! It is not only politicians, businesses or big brands that are switching to green. Culture in a wider sense is going in the same direction. And this is where we step in.

We are here to add a touch of culture to the notion of sustainable development!

Culture, obviously in the artistic sense but also in the agricultural sense. The concept of sustainable, cultural and agricultural development hence become “culturable”.

In our oppinion, environmentalism and design or art and innovation are not distinct notions anymore. IUEOA tries to assemble them through events and publications, to suggest alternatives and niche products, and to give an impetus to make actions that already exist around us more visible. The aim is to communicate on the complexity of sustainable development mostly in an artistic and interactive way.

It is certain that earth’s ressources are exhaustible and that pollution or climate change are uncontested facts. Those who ignore those facts must have skipped the news over the last few years.

Small recap:

Sustainable development is a development form that ‘meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.’

Two concepts are inherent to this notion:

* the concept of ‘need’ and more particularly essential needs of the most destitue people who should be allowed the utmost priority, and

* the idea of the limitations that the state of our techniques and our social organisation impose on the capacity of the environment to meet present and future needs.

(Report of the Brutland Commission ‘Our common future’, 1987)

That said, what can the consumer do to support sustainable development without ruining himself or losing what is dear to him? How can that be related to design, fashion or culture? What artists, graphic designers or musicians deal with those subjects? Which technical innovations follow that movement? What can we learn from other cultures? How can we intervene in everyday life?
